Key points
- Classical CAN (ISO 11898) is a differential, multi-controller bus with built-in arbitration and error handling, at up to 1 Mbit/s with payloads up to 8 bytes.12
- CAN FD raises the payload to 64 bytes and allows a faster bit rate during the data phase; CAN XL extends payloads to 2048 bytes.34
- RS-485 (TIA/EIA-485) is a differential physical layer for multi-drop links: the standard allows 32 unit loads on one bus and cable runs up to about 1,200 m at low data rates. Modbus RTU commonly runs over it.56
- Single-pair Ethernet such as 10BASE-T1L (IEEE 802.3cg) carries 10 Mbit/s over one twisted pair for up to 1 km, bringing IP networking to field devices that once used serial buses.78
